Discovering SJCHS-SJPC: The Hidden School

Beside the San Juan National High School which is the main secondary institution, the town of San Juan formely Cabalian has its two hidden secondary school which continue working until this point of time. And many students are now confused about it, continue asking that how come that there were still two secondary schools which continue to work and elaborate many of the Professional Cabalianons or even Southern Leytenios when it is only SJNHS is the only one secondary school in today's generation.

On the opening of secondary classes on 1946, which was basically turns in the month of June, the said school was started to educate first batch of students under the school name, Southeastern Leyte Provincial High School.

Then the school was the only Public High School among the six towns of the Pacific with an enrollment of 1,000 barely after its foundation. With late Gil Dagami as the school administrator.

Indeed it was already sixty-three years when this hidden school IS established for the student's education.

In 1953, the Province of Leyte stopped supporting the said school through financing because of the destruction caused by a typhoon in this year. And to prevent the closure of the said secondary institution, the Municipal members of then Municipality of Cabalian through the SB Resolution number 22, series of 1952 sponsored by the late honorable Francisco H. Casera, former SB Member, assumed the financial responsibilities.

And because of this the school was again renamed into Cabalian National Vocational High School.

By the year 1967, the conversion of school has again initiated by the virtue vested by the Republic Act 4295. From the Vocational High School it had converted in to a Comprehensive High School.

The effective convert made its enrollment rose up in to 1,200. Herewith, among thousands of thousands of today's moms and dad who were residing not only here in Cabalian but also in the other part of Southern leyte had graduated in their secondary education.

On June 24, 1983 upon its fiesta celebration, a house bill sponsored by Assemblyman and former Batasang Pambansa Speaker late Nicanor E. Yniguez converting again the said school into San Juan Polytechnic was passed and signed with the purpose of the following:
1) To produce trained and skilled manpower relevant to the socio-economic growth of the region in general and the service area in particular, along the program of agro-industrial development of the country;

2) To provide tertiary education that is accessible to the broad mass, particularly the qualified but economically disadvantaged members of society in the service area;

3) To offer technological and professional courses and provide leadership in the scientific and technical fields through research and skills training;

4) To promote and establish linkages with public and private agencies or instrumentalist within the context of an integrated implementation of development plans for the region;

5) To reinforce moral values, and to instill qualities of good citizenship through understanding and appreciation of the dignity of labor.

Now that the high school was converted into college, this doesn't mean that the school is no longer a secondary school. Although it provides tertiary education it is still working as a secondary school and all of the assets, personnel, liabilities and other properties of then San Juan Comprehensive High School are now hereby transferred to SJPC.

In SJPC many of our aunt, kuyas, ates, uncle and even mom and dad had commenced in this institution. The school are slowly developing and still gearing up into higher Progress and Improvement.

By 1999 , an act stating that the school is being integrated into semi public college institution has been initiated and on 2002 it was formally converted into a college university with the current name, Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) which now offers some tertiary courses.

But why still a high school? It simply that because our Parents and other alumna are still celebrating its Alumni Day Celebration and they still believe that in their hearts the spirit of then hidden and died HIGH SCHOOL is still educating and continuing to teach their hearts and minds not as a student but as an inspiration to their their own professional jobs every time of their lives...
